About the artist:  Erin Hamill

Erin’s earliest influences were the artists in her family and the natural setting of her home. Nature has always had a profound and meaningful influence, not only in her life, but in her art as well. Her medium of choice is ink and graphite. Erin’s work is in public, corporate and private collections nationwide.

Erin’s art has won many awards and has also been featured in national publications. Her work for conservation efforts is particularly close to her heart.

The surreal art that she creates has a deep personal meaning to her. Within each drawing she expresses her thoughts and emotions about nature and her beliefs, desires and hopes. Through symbolism she is able to express the depth of her convictions. The level of detail captured within each piece marks her personal growth.

Stippling
Erin uses a technique called stippling. The basic foundation for stippling is simple dots that, when placed correctly, form a complex subject or design. Her tools of choice are technical pens with varying nib sizes. The amount of pressure applied to the tip of the pen will produce the exact size of dot necessary for the desired effect. Small, soft touches of ink placed together will produce an even or softly graded shadow. Each dot is placed carefully, one at a time, since working with ink is unforgiving. Mistakes cannot be erased.

The design is first sketched on watercolor paper using a light grade pencil. Ink work is the next step in the process, and the stippling can easily take over 100 hours to complete. Once the ink is finished, shading or shadows are added with different grades of graphite pencils. Additionally, a watercolor wash may be applied for a touch of color.

Here is a sampling of some of Erin's Artwork:

Awakening

If you are attached to your thinking then everything has name and form…this is the world of opposites. (Zen Master Seung Sahn)

The knowledge of opposites will cause our fall, we build the wall of separation. The dragons are a representation of us, human beings, as a whole…but they are also depicting the differences between Western and Eastern philosophies and cultures. Ultimately they are after the same things in life…peace, happiness and love. From the time we are born to the moment we finally confront our last breaths, we are absorbed with the pursuit of understanding our environment, ourselves, and the nature of the reality that exists beyond. The tree shows the purpose of nature…to hold us together, without it we could not exist. So why, for something so important as this, do we treat it so badly? Without thought we destroy. The clock is a symbol of time. We need to understand that time is precious, something we cannot get back, alter or change; we must use it wisely. All together we are a whole, so we need to start acting as one. No longer a world of opposites…start taking care of each other, this earth, its animals, our home. The only one we know and share…our gift.

The Keeper
The protector of your dreams, desires and secrets, The Keeper will never betray you, but will, instead, hold safe your truth – for it is within your truth that your destiny lies. The Keeper, pure of heart, is virtuous and non-judgmental – your secrets are held safe within his strong and compassionate heart. Your destiny, unknown, is kept sheltered for your discovery and he watches over you as your path comes clear before you.

The Visionary
He is a dragon that sees and knows of what is to become of the future. With a saddened heart he watches pieces of the future unfold, but in his heart he holds hope and faith. He has seen too many evils that men are capable of, against both earth and their own. But he also knows the truth, that just as man can commit such evils he also has the power to change…so he watches and waits.
